And, hear from our current creative apprentices in our Birmingham and Bristol offices as they share their experiences and insights so far:

Tom Cantwell – Bristol said:

"I’ve been really enjoying my time as an apprentice so far. It’s been great to help come up with ideas that help brands refine their voice and tone as part of my day-to-day role.

"There’s definitely been a bit of an adjustment period coming from 13-hour shifts in a kitchen to changing to office life, but I love it – especially being able to use my creativity for some really exciting projects.

"I decided to apply for the apprenticeship scheme because I wanted to explore the creative industry and see if it was everything I imagined - and I’d say it absolutely is. It’s an incredible way to gain real-world experience without the cost of university, and I’d recommend it 100%."

Saarah Rashid – Birmingham:

"One of the biggest highlights so far has been the people I’ve met. It’s an amazing and supportive environment here at McCann. Coming from a non-advertising background, everything has been new to me, and I’m constantly filled with questions - but I’ve found I can turn to just about anyone for guidance. Oh, and another great highlight was attending my first out-of-house shoot in London!

"I’d say what surprised me most about the industry is just how many people work behind the scenes to bring an idea to life. It’s a true team effort, with different departments coming together to collaborate and achieve great results. It’s been amazing to witness.

"I honestly didn’t even know I was eligible for an apprenticeship - I thought they were only for college leavers as an alternative to university. Once I realised I could apply, it was a no-brainer. You’re learning by doing, gaining real-world experience, and getting the chance to shadow professionals, which gives you a much broader understanding of the industry than traditional education alone ever could."

Mary Fordwor – Bristol:

"Leaving a three-year law degree for advertising has been a fulfilling and interesting transition, when asked if I intend to return to law the answer is always no. Being a junior advertising creative, I see that intelligent and impactful work is not limited to law, I’ve found creative advertising to be really enjoyable and I’m looking forward to the rest of my apprenticeship!

"The learning curve has been steep, but exciting. In experiencing the variety of people and work being done within Bristol specifically – I see that contributing to intelligent and impactful work is not limited to law and never has been. Learning about what makes a good ad or campaign, and all the graft that goes into making one has been particularly interesting – from understanding audiences and brands to generating ideas that capture both. I’m often asked if I have any intention of returning to law, the answer is no. I enjoyed my degree, and it gave me many skills that I still benefit from. However, I intend to use those skills to get the most out this apprenticeship and kickstart my creative career."

Kevin Azuro - Birmingham:

"One of the things I enjoy in my role is that my responsibilities are always changing - no two days are the same! I love juggling multiple tasks, from working on pitches and executing campaigns for assigned clients to completing assignments to build my portfolio.

"One of the coolest experiences so far was being sent to London to help with a professional photoshoot. It was my first time working on such a large-scale shoot, and it was incredibly exciting! I’ve also loved getting to know the creative team better - watching them refine ideas and overcome challenges has been super educational. And, of course, grabbing a pint with them after a busy day has been a great way to bond.

"Coming into this apprenticeship without a formal marketing background, I knew I had a lot to learn. My filmmaking background focused on long-form storytelling, so shifting to short, impactful formats like billboard ads was a fun challenge and completely changed how I approach creativity.

"If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s how to juggle multiple tasks at once. You have to be flexible, jump between projects, and take feedback in your stride. Building strong relationships with the team is also key. As the saying goes, 'It takes a village' - one person might come up with an idea, but it’s the whole team that brings it to life."
